Follett’s Island (also spelled Follet’s Island, after the Follet family first settled there) is a 13-mile expanse of beach along the Gulf of Mexico that serves as a protective barrier for Christmas Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. Home to Surfside Beach (one of the top 12 beaches in Texas), Follett’s Island is immediately southwest of Galveston Island is and roughly 70 miles from the center of Houston.

A significant Portion of Follett’s Island (over 823 acres) has been purchased by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the purpose of establishing additional wildlife sanctuaries to complement the neighboring Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge – a massive 10,000 acre wildlife sanctuary, just north of Follett’s Island that shares the waters of Christmas Bay.

The northern shoreline of Follett’s Island borders the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and lies along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and Central Flyway, letting Seahorse residents marvel at over 320 species of birds that make the Brazoria Refuge their home.

Christmas Bay itself is renowned for its pristine waters and teeming wildlife, having been designated a nursery habitat by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Hundreds of waterfowl and shorebirds, both migratory and permanent, make the waters and shoreline of Christmas Bay their home while a vast variety of fish, crustaceans, and maritime creatures ply its waters.

Our founders have fallen in love with this amazing landscape and ecosystem, which is why we established our own conservation easement – the Drum Bay Nature Preserve – to ensure that as much land as possible will be set aside for the preservation of natural wonders.
